Every Thursday evening right throughout the year, from 5pm – 6.30pm, stand up paddleboarding enthusiasts from all over the Far North get together at the Kerikeri Basin (by the Stone Store) to hit the water, either for a social cruise or a fun race for those wanting to get a workout. So if you have a paddleboard why not come along? Free advice from the experts, meet other paddlers. No fees, memberships or charges, it’s purely a social get together. If you don’t have a board, then Northland Paddleboarding bring along a trailerload of boards to use – although these MUST be prebooked, by phoning 027 777 1035. After the paddling, it’s social time in the Plough and Feather, for drinks and nibbles and more chat. If you haven’t paddled before then generally we recommend a lesson first, again contact Northland Paddleboarding to arrange this. Stand up paddleboarding is excellent exercise and very low impact, and it’s always good to be on the water. So if running, swimming, cycling etc doesn’t float your boat but you want to get into shape, then this is a great way to do it. Don’t worry if you don’t have great balance, you can start off on easy wide boards that offer great stability. It’s not a getting-wet sport unless you want it to be. And if you’re competitive then you really should give the racing a try, it’s a lot of fun and a full-on aerobic all-body workout. Come on down on a Thursday evening and check it out!
